James Gooder

CV (Word doc)

James is a versatile journalist who has written a broad range of news and feature stories for the Independent on Sunday and most recently has been working as a freelance writer for Reuters Foundation’s website and print publications, covering sustainable development projects worldwide. His broad journalistic interests include international and domestic politics, development issues, human rights and the arts.
He travelled widely while working as an English teacher and - on occasion - a professional musician, living in France, Portugal, the States and Japan. He has a good command of French and Japanese, and though currently based in London he is always ready to go abroad at short notice. In addition to his journalistic work, he continues to teach English for business people and journalists at International House, Mayfair.

In 2001 James completed an MA in International Journalism at City University, London’s renowned journalism department, among a diverse and talented group of reporters from around the globe. The course enhanced a wide range of skills including newsgathering, writing, editing and layout (using Adobe InDesign). As arts editor of one of the course’s London Globe newspaper and editor of the Prism magazine, he learnt much about news values and how to manage people.

He helped the Independent on Sunday to break the scandal of asylum seekers being imprisoned without charge in August 2001, and his MA thesis further investigated questions of immigration and asylum in the UK.
